• THE UPSURGE OF SPOUSAL KILLINGS IN KENYA

It is indeed heartbreaking at the rate in which many young people’s lives are being lost most especially in relationships. It is generally believed that relationships is where people obtain mutual love, respect and companionship for one another coupled with other factors that make the bond strong to create healthy relationships which at some point may result in long-term friendships that lead to successful marriage .

However, this norm has taken a new twist most especially with the current generation whereby many young people are engaging in relationships which unfortunately turn to claim their lives. There are many unfulfilled dreams lying in the graves as a result of murder associated by love triangles. It is disheartening to the parents and guardians of these young individuals who have invested heavily in their education only for them to die even before graduating from their respective education institutions.

Let us sample out some deaths that have recently hit news headlines here in Kenya. In Bomet County, a 21-year old, Ismael Kipng’eno Langat is in custody after he accused his 25-year old lover for allegedly flirting with other male friends on her Facebook account prompting him to take the deadly action. The incident happened when the deceased had just returned home from college where she was schooling. After hacking the lover to death using a panga, he then turned to his father, who had responded to the distressing call from the lady but luckily managed to dodge the panga.Ismael defended his action by claiming that he felt betrayed by the lady after selling his piece of land to educate her which i guess should not amount to taking away someone’s life. The lady’s body has been moved to Longisa Referral Hospital Mortuary as investigations into the incident continues.

In Nairobi, Kenya the famously known DJ Brownskin whose actual name is Michael Macharia, has been charged with aiding his wife to commit suicide. This follows a video that went viral on social media platforms in which he was seen just sitted comfy watching his wife, Sharon Njeri Mwangi drink poison which few minutes later she died. The incident occured on July 23, 2022 at the couple’s home in Kariobangi South in Nairobi. Many have accused him of failing to prevent his wife from taking poison. As couples, Brownskin should have taken a bolder step to stop the wife from the mess, sit down together and have an in-depth discussion and solve their issues within because perhaps the lady was undergoing some sort of depression and no one gave an ear to her including the husband himself. It is really disturbing watching someone consume poison and yet the partner is sitted comfy recording a video. As if that is not enough, he goes ahead to call their kids to witness what has happened something which will never be erased in the minds and hearts of the young individuals. They might feel unsafe under the care of their father after the demise of their mother. The big question that will keep knocking their minds is “if dad could not protect mum from dying, how safe are we under his arms?”

Another incident happened in Kasarani, Nairobi County where residents of an estate Maji Mazuri were left in utter shock after a boda boda rider killed his wife and later called his daughter to witness the atrocity he had done.He stabbed his wife using a sharp knife severally to death before making an attempt to harmself. The young girl may feel tortured by what she saw her mum go through and develop negative attitude towards the male gender.Unforgiving heart towards the dad who sadly took away her mother’s life.

In Vihiga County, a man by the name, Dickson Indeku who killed his girlfriend over alleged cheating suspicions surrendered to the police days after commiting the heinous crime. He is reported to have gone into hiding after attacking his lover with a knife stabbing him to death on Saturday, March 25,2023.He was later arraigned for the murder case and detectives pleaded for more time to hold him.

The incident that really hit news headlines in Kenya for quite some time was of the slain Moi University, Medical student, Ivy Wangeci who was by then pursuing Medicine and surgery. She was murdered in broad daylight four years ago by Naftali Kinuthia who hacked her twice on the head using an axe outside Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).The incident happened just a day before her birthday that was to take place on the 10th April, 2019 to celebrate 25years of age.Her life was painfully cut short. The frustrated Kinuthia claims that the deceased annoyed her after seeing her holding hands with male friends in lab coats, he lost control went to his car picked the axe and hacked Wangeci to death. No amount of explanation can justify his deadly action at all.Taking away someone’s life just like that should be considered a serious crime.Remember, Ivy Wangeci was a promising young lady full of life and just like that her light was dimmed before the onset of her career as a medical personell.

These are sample stories that are indeed heartbreaking.Remember life is precious and once taken away, it can never be returned.Life is a broader picture which can only be viewed from different perspectives. Two weak people cannot make a perfect match. It only requires a strong individual to hold the weak partner and table their ideas to settle troubles within them. From my own point of view, i think relationships have imperfections of different kinds but still people do manoeuvre along.Feed one another with optimism of what revolves round this cruel world.I guess to have a smooth conversation, couples should avoid attacking one another during arguments since the other partner might feel inferior.Above all couples or friends in relationships should mutually love one another, have respect and be honest to avoid such painful incidents in the future.

  • ROAD ACCIDENTS IN KENYA

The rampant rate at which road accidents in Kenyan roads are occuring is alarming. From the begining of this year alone, very many deaths that involve serious road accidents have been reported.A significant number of people are still living in a denial state following the deadly injuries that have made them totally disabled thus making their lives take a u-turn.The normal activities that were conducted with ease have now become a total nightmare with some depending on the aid from those close to them.Sombre mood engulfing families of those involved in the accidents with the fear of never setting eyes upon loved ones anymore.

On 22nd June 2023, a sombre mood engulfed the family Agesa Grace Mitchell, a third-year student of Baraton University following her sudden demise after being involved in a grisly road accident in Kakamega county. The promising life of the young lady pursuing English Literature was sadly cut short.

The devastating news concerning Agesa’s death were shared by her institution,Baraton University. She died on the spot after the bodaboda that carried her was involved in a road accident in Kakamega making her body dismembered. As the total number of casualties and deaths remains unknown, Kenyans have in unison sent some condolence messages to the family and friends showing a sign of empathy.

The charming young lady whose future was so bright was on a long holiday and was set to join her final year of study this September.According to reports made public by Baraton University, Grace will be buried on the 28th of June 2023, at her parents’ home in Kakamega county.Indeed death is cruel and has left a painful gap in the family of Grace Mitchell.

This accident comes just a month after the death of a Rongo University student, Michael Ngala. The accident happened at Awendo in Migori county when Michael was travelling from home heading to his school.According to a statement by the deceased’s cousin, Brian Odhiambo, the final year student was scheduled for two examination papers just two days before he met his untimely death that were to mark the end of his academic studies at Rongo university.Michael Ngala was Rongo University’s immediate president before he handed power to the newly elected leadership a week before he met his death

It is very painful burying such young souls with unfulfilled dreams.A great pain for the family to bear most especially for the parents and guardians who have struggled to ensure they offer the best they can to this youngsters, pay their education fully only for their dreams to be cut short in a road accident.

Our minds will never erase the painful death caused by a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of four members of the same family early this year on the 22nd February 2023.The famous tiktoker,Kevin Oselu, famously known as baba Mona , his two sisters and only daughter, were the people enroute in a saloon car they were travelling in to Awasi where he was to drop the two sisters before proceeding to Kisumu for his duties. The accident struck them along Londian-Muhoroni highway near the tunnel Trading center in Marenda Subcounty, Kipkelion East. The 3-year old baby Mona, died without achieving or enjoying life fully on this world.Indeed death is so cruel.Robbing out four members of the same family ain’t a joke.

On the 24th February, 2019 four family members died along Nakuru-Nairobi highway. Vehicle collided with a bus in Naivasha.Victims were from a burial in Kisumu county.Such deaths are really devastating news to actually hear.

I have just sampled few stories but in reality, accidents in Kenyan roads have become too much.Great measures have to be put in place to ensure safety on our roads.

  • WORLD’S FATHER’S DAY

World’s Father’s day is a very special day commemorated annually on the 18th June to celebrate men who play a big role in the lives of their families most especially being present in their lives of their children as they transition from childhood to adulthood.

The title ‘Father’ is very important in a man’s life and therefore has to actively take up his responsibilities once he has decided he is fit and ready to settle and start a family.Being the head of the house, he should man up, put his ego aside and show affection to his family wholly making them his first priority before anything else.It may seem a great task but trust me it is worth and it evidently show out.

Being present in the life of your family most especially kids is very much important.Creating time and a conducive environment to bond with them enables your children feel more safe and will always confidently look up to you.Remember, being too paranoid or over strict to your children instills fear in them to an extent some may feel free to confide some information to friends or other people who may perhaps mislead them.

For the responsible and caring fathers who nurture their children in the right way, they should be celebrated on this big day.It should be made clear that a ‘father’ may not just be a biological father to children he sires or sired but can also be the father figures present in the lives of the children taking up the roles effectively in a family. With this i mean several instances might come up that lead to children not getting all the provisions, affection and security from a biological father but rather would get it from a father figure present. This may be as a result of death, divorce, separation, sickness, family wrangles and so many other issues that may arise

For those parents that are co-parenting quite well, it is fine as long their is a mutual understanding and respect for one another just for the sake of the children who suffer the most when there is a disagreement between parents.Mothers who have decided to take up the role by themselves single-handedly to give the best they can offer to their children have to be celebrated as well.

  • ACADEMIC TOUR TO NAIROBI

The 13th June 2023 will forever remain in the minds and hearts of the Journalism and Mass Communication students of Elgon View College – Kisii never to be erased. This is thanks to the academic trip to Nairobi county that kicked off at exactly 10:00pm from Kisii County on Tuesday 13th June 2023.

The whole idea was brought forth by senior lecturer, Mr.Jeremiah Otieno who shared the idea to the school administration for approval then presented it to the students who further informed their parents and guardians who supported the idea fully without giving it a second thought.I was also extremely grateful to be part of this amazing team.

At dawn, on the 14th of June 2023, we touched down safely in the great city of Nairobi ushered in by tall buildings, busy roads and early risers who most probably were heading to their work places.Without further ado we were warmly accommodated in spacious rooms where we were to spend two nights. We enjoyed the delicious breakfast that was served to us, had a short rest then at exactly 11:00am we were off to the Parliament.

The Senate was our first stop, the joy on the students’ faces said it all.We were ushered in and had seat at the public gallery as we keenly followed the proceedings by the senators. The speaker of the senate, Amason Jeffah Kingi acknowledged our presence which was indeed a honourable gesture to us.

The senators present for the sitting on that particular day articulated their points clearly concerning the water bill that was tabled for discussion on that day.Though the sitting was adjourned briefly and was to resume on 19th June 2023, we were contented to have had a clear image of how the Senate looks like and the activities that take place apart from the imaginations and speculations we had previously.

We then proceeded to the National Assembly where members of Parliament were discussing the contentious financial bill 2023/2024.It was a heated debate with the majority side absolutely defending their points as they propose the bill while the minority side strongly opposing the bill supporting their statements with pregnant points. No matter how much the members of Parliament seemed so furious against their fellow opponents,it is their duty to make laws and pass bills that give citizens who entrusted them with their votes a key priority.

On the 15th June 2023, we paid a visit to KBC media organization which was also in our bucketlist. At exactly 10:00am we were right there, very curious and ready to learn and get some experience.More gratitude to Madam who took us round, the technical room, tv and radio studios and other places within the media organization.Students had the opportunity to freely interact with some staff members and freely asked questions.Detailed explanations were given to queries that were brought forth by students who had the urge to understand some information clearly.Indeed, it was an awesome experience that we definitely enjoyed every bit.

  • KENYANS TO PREPARE FOR HARD TIMES AHEAD

It is just barely eight months since Kenyans went to the ballot and elected the current duo led by President William Samoei Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.During the campaign season, the ‘hustler’ narrative was a common phrase that was used to as a ‘bait trap’ to Kenyans who actually entrusted their hopes in the current regime by voting them in to occupy the high office.

President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua are facing a great challenge trying to fulfill the promises they delivered to Kenyans during the campaign period.Their manifesto appeared real before the eyes of Kenyans who never gave it a second thought since they were the key priority to be sorted.

Reality is now hitting hard most especially with the high cost of living. The skyrocketing prices on basic commodities and essential services is worrying.Majority of Kenyans can no longer afford three meals a day.In as much as subsidies were removed on commodities to pave way for long-term measures of dealing with food insecurities in the country, it has become a double tragedy since there is food shortage due to the prolonged drought experienced in various parts of the country. The fertilizer that was to be obtained at an affordable price is nowhere to be found.Various farmers have raised complains of being unable to access the affordable fertilizers.

The government is trying its best to deal with food shortage situation by introducing GMO foods which many have doubts about the safety of consumption. Some of the questions kenyans are seeking to know, “are GMO foods really fit for human consumption and to human health? ” Remember, GMO have adverse effects posing human health at high risk since these are just organisms modified by Scientists by editing their DNA in a lab setting. It’s my wish that our government takes a keen look into the matter and instead of going for the GMO stuff, farmers should be given a major boost to produce more yields that are fit for human consumption.

Taxation is also another monster brought forth. It is with no doubt that any government is unable to effectively carry out its operations without imposing taxation which is confined within the law. However, unnecessary taxation or imposing high taxes on almost everything is absurd.Take an example of the contentious financial bill 2023/2024 that is causing a heated debate in the country. Many people have openly opposed it creating an uproar as angry Kenyan lawmakers vow to vote against the financial bill.Kenyans are already feeling the burden of dealing with the high cost of living.

The cry and plight of Kenyans should act as a wake-up call to the President, William Samoei Ruto and the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua so as to take an immediate action to resolve the urgent matters raised.

  • THE CRY OF STARVING KENYANS

Our country is engulfed with resentful citizens appealing to the government to look into the escalating cost of food prices. With the current economic situation, majority of Kenyans cannot afford three meals a day.It is a very devastating state seeing Kenyans struggle to make ends meet yet at the end of the day what they have may not be enough to feed themselves or families. That’s why most university students opt to ‘kuinama’ a term used basically to refer to the skipping of meals as a way of surviving. The hard times seem to give Kenyans a hawk-eye even as those in arid and semi-arid places languish in hopelessness of famine.Areas like Kajiado that have been heavily stricken by the drought situation leading to massive deaths of citizens and livestock. To make matters worse they are forced to sell their livestock for as low as 500 Kenyan Shillings per cow to evade losses which they still incur by painfully watching their animals perish due to hunger.Approximately, the cost of a cow should be a range of 80,000-25,0000 Kenyan Shillings.

It is a great shame that in this country, resources meant to alleviate hunger are pilfered by a few corrupt public officials. With all the resources Kenya is rich of;Kenya is rich of oil,the Tullow Oil which estimates that Kenya’s Turkana fields holds 560million barrels of oil.Quite a good sum of money can be made when we export the product. The gold mines in Bureti sub-county in Kericho,Migori County is also well known due to the Migori gold belt in Kenya. There are over 40gold mines in the region. It is therefore, very difficult to believe that our country is so poor that citizens have to starve.

Corruption continues to be the serious barrier to the progress and fairness in Kenya. It has made its way to minds and pockets of most individuals. These has literally crippled families, ravaged individual’s pockets and sadly,it has been the major cause of loss of lives. As some people wake up to engage in nation-building,others work to siphon public funds meant to serve Kenyans.I believe the government should make Kenyans life a key priority. Is it really fair for leaders to divert funds set aside perhaps for the farmers who play a big role in feeding the nation? In the recent years farmers have suffered a poor harvest yet individuals misembezzled funds meant for fertilizer subsidy.22,September 2022,there was a subsidy in cost of fertilizer which was officially launched by our Deputy President,Rigathi Gachagua who flagged off the first consignment of subsidized fertilizer to various parts of the country at Harambee House Annex,Nairobi. It was to retail at 3500Kenyan Shillings but did the prices even last?NO.

The increased rate in which basic commodities in most retail outlets is ravaging Kenyans. The cost of living has escalated in the recent months despite the previous prices being a nightmare to many citizens. The government should be ready to give an ear to the plight of hungry Kenyans. In as much as a long-term solution is best, but health of the nation should not be put at risk.Imagine Cancer cases on the rise following the importation of mercury-laced sugar and maize full of aflatoxins and still the government wants to bring in GMO foods.Even though it will help curb food scarcity in the country,I personally tend to differ with the move. The GMO foods have a greater effect putting human health at risk since these are just organs modified by scientists by editing their DNA in a lab setting.Rather than going for the GMO,the farmers should be given a boost to produce good farm yields that are fit for human consumption.

Taking a keen look, especially on the drought stricken areas of Kajiado,Baringo,Wajir,Marsabit…majority of the households have huge livestock but drought would not let them prosper. Both people and animals perish in hunger.Painful to watch women and children suffer more to death.A little child trying to suckle its mother’s shrinked breast with no milk while crying.I wish the Kenyan government would handle the matter with total seriousness by looking for a long-term solution to save people from such situations.Having set up a paybill 880990 to allow Kenyans donate for the drought victims is not a bad move by the government but how sure are we that every single coin will count and that no money will end up in pockets of corrupt officials.I believe the President,William Samoei Ruto will keep his word as he promised while in Baringo of building 1000 dams across the country to help increase food production. It will be the best solution to curb the menace surrounding food scarcity in the country. We as Kenyans wait patiently for the establishment of the dams even though the Arror and Kimwarer dam projects remained to be a dream after they were canceled on grounds that the project was technically and financially not feasible.

  • DECLINE IN TOURISM SECTOR IN KENYA

I tend to think that the biggest impendiment to the growth of our tourism sector is our limited focus on parks and beaches. We barely market Kenya as a tourism destination beyond those two.If thousands of tourists can through medieval structures and ancient ruins in Europe everyday, then at least hundreds of them should be thronging Koobi Fora,in Turkana, the very cradle of mankind because that is beyond ancient. It is pre-historic;it is the very beginning. If people can pay top dollar to go and see Stonehenge in England, how much would they pay to see the crying stone in Kakamega?

It boils down to how we view our country, how we market it and how we sell our story.Kenya is more than parks and beaches. These two are very very important, but not the assets we can show off.If we became a little bit more innovative and a little bit more invested, there would be so much that Kenya can offer the world in terms of tourism and I would love it if we could listen in the comment section

Once again I will ask, should we only take pride in having the only National Park in a Capital City and just be satisfied with that?Shouldn’t we go beyond sentimentalism and push to have that park become a major revenue stream for our capital?Besides being a park, how else do we market it to the world?Have we invested in selling it as an epic filming destination for example?

  • Cyberbullying

    What is cyberbulling

Cyber bullying is when one uses technology to harass, threaten, embarrass or even target another person. It happens on devices like computers, smartphones, tablets or game systems.

Bullies are very hard to deal with. They can be cruel, relentless and very personal. That should not bring you down.Nothing makes you look worse than turning around and attack in return.

    SIGNS OF CYBER BULLYING

    Majority of people who face online bully may avoid sharing their experience to anyone to cover up the shame.Some kids and teens may fear their devices being taken away from them by their parents or guardians.Some signs of cyber bullying may include;

    • Being emotionally upset during or after using the internet.

•State of being nervous when a message, text or email pops in.

•Some tend to avoid discussions about computers or phone activities.

•Spending more time than usual closed in rooms.

•Sudden urge to stop the use of internet devices.

•High level of privacy about one’s digital life.

VARIOUS APPROACH TO DEAL WITH CYBER BULLYING

Cyber bullying experience can be so traumatizing thus may even lower your self-esteem especially when there is no one or nowhere to turn for help.Ever wondered how to go about with such kind of issue, then here are some simple steps that would guide you through

    Approach 1: Take screenshots

Screenshots is the best way for you to report a cyber bullying scenario. It provides perfect evidence since a person who is cyber bullying you may delete their comments when they realize that it may get them in trouble.Screenshots will always ensure you have a copy of what was said.

Approach 2: Avoid making immediate response

The main aim of a cyber bully is to intimidate, frustrate or annoy the person in target to get the emotional reaction of the targeted person. If you are being cyber bullied just know the person targeting you wants you to respond. The best way to deal with this is to ignore. If someone says something that upsets you online, tags you in a photo you don’t like or generally does something unkind, just put down your phone for an hour or more.Take a break to give yourself some emotional distance and carefully think before making any response.

Approach 3: Follow up when calmer

Taking a break from your phone, will definitely make you feel calmer. You can decide to go back online if you feel relieved, maybe even with a friend or family member in the room with you.The idea is to get a proper feeling for the situation before contacting the person who is cyber bullying you.Using calm, neutral language, try to work out the situation with the person without letting them get to you. They might not realize that you interpreted their actions as cyber bullying,so a calm conversation is a good place to start.

Approach 4: Try to stop frequent check posts

When you are in the thick of a cyber bully attack,it can feel like the bully is literally present with you, shouting things in your ear and demanding your attention. But it doesn’t have to be that way,you can always limit your social media time to a few hours a day or whatever that’s best for you. That way,the bullying doesn’t feel constant and you can take a break from the online world to look after yourself.

    Approach 5: Report and block

    Most social media sites want to help you feel safe online.They don’t want you to experience cyber bullying and so they have built-in tools to keep you safe.If things still get worse,you can decide to report the matter to a relevant authority.Before raising a complaint,make sure you;

    1. Have Copies of the cyber bullying material for enough evidence; screenshots or photos.
    2. Report the material to the social media service for action.
    3. Gather more evidence to support your complain.
    4. Try as much as possible to give accurate facts about the issue.
